SUPPORTING YOUNG PEOPLE ON THE HIBISCUS COAST
STEP INTO A BRIGHTER FUTURE

The Programme
The Five W's & H
WHO
Coast Mentoring supports young people aged 10-24 yrs who are referred to us by counsellors, social workers and psychologists. They believe that the young person would benefit from having an adult mentor to support them on their journey.
WHAT
Mentors meet up with their young person on a weekly basis. The focus of their time is building a caring and trusting relationship. Together they talk, learn, grow and have a lot of fun along the way!
WHEN
The programme was launched in September/October 2020! Since starting the mentoring journey on the Coast, we are hearing from parents that their child has grown in self confidence, developed new skills, are having fun and feel well supported.
WHERE
The programme is for young people who hang on the Hibiscus Coast - that's Whangaparaoa to Silverdale and everywhere in between!
WHY
We know that mentoring creates a positive impact. It helps our young people to know that they are cared for and well supported. When young people are connected with a positive role model they grow in self confidence, self esteem and are motivated toward achieving goals. We are all about promoting the well being of young people and maximising their potential.
HOW
Coast Youth Community Trust is partnered with Upside Youth Mentoring to deliver the programme to the Coast.
Our Story
The Coast is called home by a large number of 10-24-year olds. Many of these young people are struggling with mental health issues, life skills, education and a lack of positive role models.
Mentoring has been identified by MSD and extensive mental health studies, to be an effective tool in building resilience in young people and contributing to flourishing as human beings.
Local police have estimated that 90% of the young people who they are working with are lacking positive role models to mentor and guide them, due to dysfunctional family relationships. Other government social service agencies are repetitively reaching out for mentors to work with young people who need guidance and ‘along-siders’ to help guide them.
In response, CYC Trust have partnered with Upside Youth Mentoring to provide a mentoring service that will support low-medium risk young people on the Coast.
